8 Tips for Surviving with a Toddler & a Baby
One - Involve your toddler
Toddlers LOVE to be “helpful” - and involving your eldest in caring for the baby can be a great way to make them feel needed and included. You could ask them to fetch nappies, or help choose outfits for their baby sibling - or even help with bath-time.
Two - Prioritise one-on-one time
Having a new baby in the house can bring on some big feelings for our biggest little ones. We may also be feeling mum guilt for not being able to give them all of our time like we used to. Carving out special dedicated time to spend with your toddler can be a great way to fill their cup and yours. Little rituals like having breakfast together, or taking a walk to the park while your partner/a loved one watches baby can be great ways to have some quality time together.
Three - Navigating life with a baby and a toddler can be a handful - literally!
The baby always wants to be held and your eldest is always wanting your attention... and then, there is the endless housework that needs to somehow be done.
Babywearing can be a great way to satisfy your littlest’s need to be held, while keeping your hands free for toddler time, or actually getting anything done! Choose a quality wrap/carrier/sling that feels comfy and secure.
Four - Make a toddler basket
Fill a small basket or box with some special toys for your toddler that are only brought out while you are feeding the baby. This is a great way to keep them occupied and engaged with an activity while you tend to your baby’s needs - hopefully with minimal interruption! You can rotate the items in the basket to keep it interesting.
Five - Synchronise naps
If your toddler still naps, you may be able to synchronise their day sleep with one of your baby’s naps. This gives you a well-deserved break - or even a chance for you to sneak in a little sleep too, Mama.
Six - Get organised with food
Prepping healthy snacks and meals for your toddler in advance can take a lot of stress out of your day. You can fill the freezer with baking, or quick-to-heat nutritious meals that are easy to reach for during the chaos of the day.
You may also find it helpful to pack a little lunchbox for your toddler every morning so that it’s good-to-go when you need it - or easy to pop in the stroller for eating out and about.
Seven - Accept Imperfection
This season of life can feel like a real roller coaster - caring for two very young children is no walk in the park, that’s for sure! Some days are going to be messy, some will bring tears (yours included!), and others will bring so much love and happiness that it feels like your heart could burst! Give yourself grace on the hard days, and know that it’s OK if not everything gets done.
Eight - Ask for help
There are no rewards for burning yourself out - life with two little ones is challenging. It’s OK to ask your loved ones for help so that you can have a break, have some time for self-care, or even just have some support around the house.
You’re doing a wonderful job, Mama. It does get easier with time.
